Learn How to Weave: DIY Mini Weaving Tutorial by Ana Ilyas

Learn How to Make a Weaving Loom and How to Weave by Fiber Art Maker, Ana Ilyas

One of the things I love about DIY takeovers is having crafters on board to showcase their arts and crafts specialty with everyone. Over the weekend, my good friend and Fiber Art Maker, Ana from My Flair Story took over The Artsy Craftsy for a 3-Day DIY Instagram Takeover. Ana taught us how to make a mini loom with accessible materials and the basic art of weaving. Ana’s mini weaving video tutorial was a hit! Everyone loved it, and the best part- it is there available for you to craft anytime in the comfort of your own home. Here’s a recap of Ana’s DIY weaving takeover:

Ana Takes Over

Hi! I'm Ana a Fiber Art Maker from @myflairstory. I am from Indonesia, but I am currently living in Abu Dhabi with my husband and kiddo. I make joyful fiber art and I teach yarn crafting. I started crocheting when I was 14 years old, and eventually grew into weaving and latch hooking. I find yarn crafting as one of the most therapeutic activities to balance my daily life. When I am crafting, I love colourful colours and patterns like polka dots. You will be able to notice them in my work all the time.

One of the things I love most about small craft businesses or the arts & crafts industry is that I am able to spark joy in someone's home. Whenever I see someone tag me, it truly sparks happiness. That's how I feel with teaching as well, especially when I see the excitement in someone when they are crafting. Being able to see them enjoy themselves makes me happy. I will be sharing a simple basic weaving tutorial using a DIY cardboard loom.

To make your own loom, here's what you need:
1. Cardboard (or anything that is sturdy and solid. You can use a cereal box too)
2. Scissors
3. Pencil / Pen
4. Ruler

You will need to create the frame using the board to hold your yarns later on.

To start weaving, you will need:
1. Yarns (any kind)
2. Plastic Needle (or you can use your hand)
3. Fork
4. Ice cream stick

Once you are good to go, watch the IGTV video and weave! Your mini woven piece can be used as a necklace, a car decoration or even as a fridge magnet.

Here's how the final work looks like!

Some Tips on Weaving

In my final post, I would like to share with you a few weaving tips and inspirations that I have made for you. If you are up for a challenge, you can always go for a bigger loom. I bought my loom from different places, but if you are looking for one, for starters you can try looking for one at your local Spotlight Stores. You will be able to find a good size for beginners especially for those who are up for a challenge.

Pro Tip 1
When it comes to weaving or any other yarn crafting, one basic rule is to always have fun while crafting.

Pro Tip 2
Follow your heart when you are choosing your favourite colours, learn to incorporate and try different materials.

Pro Tip 3
If you are not satisfied with what you do, don’t worry, all you have to do is try again.

Pro Tip 4
There is no right or wrong when it comes to crafting, as it is supposed to be therapeutic after all.

I hope you enjoyed this takeover! If you have any questions about weaving or find out more about my weaving class, feel free to slide me a DM on @myflairstory. Don't forget to share with us your work! Tag us at @myflairstory and @theartsycraftsy
